About the Exhibition
In 'Tap into the Unknown - Nugget Square', Elizaveta Rukavishnikova explores the city of Johannesburg at night through her paintings on repurposed satellite dishes and paper. In particular, she responds to the surroundings of Nugget Square, a place found downtown in the heart of the city’s CBD. This place exists in the chaotic midst of activities that take place in a city like Johannesburg, activities which span broadly across legality, formality and friendliness. Rukavishnikova sees the city she now calls home as a complex place, one that is ridden by crime, poverty, corruption, intrigue and death.
Rukavishnikova’s body of work is a reflection on experiences, translated into a painterly language. This language is composed of a unique combination of iconographic images as well as symbolic writings. The artist’s paintings deal with making sense of the unknowable incidents and human moments that take place within her immediate surroundings while her system of writing probes into the greater unknown which exists in the cosmos.
