Ulriche Jantjes has majored in painting at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. Growing up in a household that encouraged the arts and nurtured creativity motivated Ulriche to pursue art. Her work is inspired by memories and heritage and is especially interested in how memories of the past inform the way we respond to the present. Ulriche predominantly uses oil paint but often experiments with mixed media as a way to explore the tactility of a painting’s surface and the textures upon it.
Selected paintings by Ulriche have been inspired by a childhood memory based on a period of time in which she shared a bedroom with her terminally ill grandmother. These works reveal a close relationship between the canvas, paint and the artist – a relationship which has exposed various emotive states in the making of the works.
