Light Years is an exhibition of painting and illustration by Lisolomzi Pikoli that explores, in part, the magical possibilities of time travel. The artist’s work has always explored concepts of space, time, and the simultaneously fleeting and infinite nature of moments and memories. These ideas have led Pikoli to a question that seeks to illuminate the intangible nature of the physical-metaphysical world. If all the fabric of the universe is constructed of vibrating particles known as matter that makes all we see, feel and experience on Earth, can we - even for a second - bend our own perspectives of the physical world as light does when it travels? This body of work is inspired by how the light around us creates an illusion of reality. In it, Pikoli has chosen to paint instances from his dreams, using imagination as an ode to those that came before us, asserting that the works depict “scenes of our ancestry, our shared natural world, and our healing hearts.”
